Safe Mode

Because you may install a plug-in from a third-party author that that you don't trust, you can activate X-Setup's "Safe Mode". If this mode is activated, X-Setup will ask you before the plug-in is allowed to change anything on your system. These security measures apply to X-Setup Wizards as well, since wizards are based on plug-in technology.

What happens when I activate Safe Mode?

If a plug-in tries to change anything on your computer (for example, write a registry value, change an INI value, delete a file etc.), a message appears displaying what the plug-in tries to do and if the plug-in should be allowed to perform this action. If you select "No" in this dialog, the plug-in is not allowed to perform the action and will be shut down. No changes are made to your system in this case.

How do I activate Safe Mode?

In Plug-in Mode (Default UI):
You can either click on the Safe Mode icon on the Toolbar (symbolized by a padlock), or click on the File Menu and choose 'Safe Mode'. You can always check to see if Safe Mode is activated, since the padlock icon on the toolbar and on the File menu is 'depressed'. To disable Safe Mode, just click on the padlock again.

In Wizard Mode
Click on the 'Config...' button at any time while using the Wizard. Then, on the 'Security' tab, put a tick besides the 'Activate Safe Mode' option. Then click 'OK'.

Even if Safe Mode is not activated, X-Setup performs several security checks:

  • Changes are only allowed when you press the "Apply Changes" button - if any plug-in tries to make changes somewhere else it's shut down automatically
  • If a command a plug-in performs fails (for example it tries to copy the file LOGO.SYS and this file does not exist) it's also shut down
  • The plug-in is only allowed to execute 30 seconds. If any action takes longer then this, the plug-in is shut down
  • Other security checks that are perform when a command inside the plug-in is invoked. For example, if the plug-in tries to remove a path from the registry and this path contains sub-values the plug-in is also shut down. It will also shut down plug-ins which try to change X-Setup's settings.
